CHAPTER 1: Sunset at Pier Seven

The marina looked like a place built for people who had never been told no.

At sunset, the water turned bronze and blue beneath rows of white superyachts. Dock lights flickered on one by one. Well-dressed guests drifted along the promenade with champagne in hand, their laughter softened by distance and money. Everything at Pier Seven was polished enough to make ordinary people feel like they had wandered into someone else’s life.

Then the old man appeared from the left-side dock walkway.

He was lean and weathered, sixty-seven years old, with gray hair, a plain white T-shirt, faded jeans, and white sneakers that had seen more real pavement than polished decks. His name was Daniel Whitaker, though almost nobody around the marina still connected that name to what it once meant. In his right hand, half-hidden by his fingers, he carried a small brass yacht key.

He walked toward the largest vessel at the end of the dock.

It was the kind of yacht people photographed before even asking whose it was. Long white lines. Dark glass. Quiet power. A floating kingdom.

Before Daniel could reach the gangway, the security manager stepped forward from his post near the yacht.

He was thirty-eight, muscular, dressed in a black suit and tie with sunglasses and an earpiece, carrying himself with the confidence of a man who believed access was a form of authority.

“Private dock,” he said. “Keep moving.”

Daniel stopped, calm eyes fixed on the yacht behind him. “I’m here for my boat.”

The security manager looked him up and down once.
