CHAPTER 7: The Cost of Looking Wrong

he surrounding guests had gone from curious to uncomfortable.

At first they watched because a plainly dressed old man being turned away from a superyacht resembled entertainment. Now they watched because the scene had become an accusation and they were part of the audience that had accepted the wrong script too easily.

A woman in linen muttered to her husband, “I thought he was some wanderer.”

Her husband answered, “That’s because we’re used to thinking ownership has a uniform.”

He said it softly, but Daniel heard.

So did Damon.

The marina itself seemed to divide into two realities. In one, wealth still shimmered on water and polished metal. In the other, the entire place had just been exposed as a machine for deciding worth by surface.

Damon removed his sunglasses completely now. “Mr. Whitaker, I owe you an apology.”

Daniel considered him.

Captain Ellis and the crew stayed silent. They understood this was no longer about access to the yacht.

It was about what happens after a man is measured wrongly.

“You owe yourself a better habit,” Daniel said.

Damon frowned, almost not understanding.

Daniel went on. “If you only know how to guard things for rich people, you’ll spend your whole life missing the people the things were built for.”

The words landed harder than any insult.
