CHAPTER 5: The Men Who Stand Between People and Their Own Lives

Damon Shaw had always believed his job was to guard access.

He rarely asked access to what.

That was the uncomfortable thought now pressing against the back of his throat as he watched Daniel Whitaker stand beneath the waking lights of his own yacht. Damon had not merely blocked a stranger. He had inserted himself between a man and one of the last meaningful things left in that man’s life.

There are mistakes that feel administrative.

And there are mistakes that reveal character.

This was the second kind.

“I wasn’t informed,” Damon said at last, hating how weak it sounded.

Captain Ellis turned his head slowly. “That’s not his burden.”

The crew remained still behind the captain, serious and respectful, their silence making Damon feel more exposed than any lecture could have.

Daniel looked at him then. Not with cruelty. Not with triumph. Somehow, that made it worse.

Men like Damon know how to handle rage. They do not know what to do with quiet disappointment.

A soft breeze moved across the dock. The blue underwater lights shimmered beneath the yacht’s hull. Dock ropes stayed taut. The brass key remained in Daniel’s right hand.

“Sir,” Damon began again, “if I had known—”

Daniel cut him off gently. “That’s the point.”

Damon fell silent.
