CHAPTER 8: The Gangway Home

The captain stepped aside and offered Daniel the gangway.

This time no one blocked him.

He started forward slowly, not because age made him weak, but because the moment asked to be felt. White sneakers on the dock. Faded jeans. Plain shirt. Brass key still in his right hand. He looked nothing like the men who usually boarded boats like that.

And yet he looked more natural walking toward it than anyone else on the pier.

At the foot of the gangway, Daniel paused and turned back once.

Damon still stood there, uncertain whether to remain rigid or say something else. The guests watched in silence. The blue underwater lights moved softly beneath the hull. Behind Daniel, the crew waited with respectful patience.

“Mr. Shaw,” Daniel said.

Damon straightened at once. “Sir?”

“Next time, look at the man, not the shirt.”

The sentence did not need volume.

It settled over the dock with the finality of a judgment already earned.

Damon nodded, unable to defend himself and wise enough now not to try.

Daniel then placed one foot on the gangway and began to climb.

For the first time that evening, the yacht no longer looked like an unreachable symbol of wealth.
