CHAPTER 3: The Envelope on His Lap

Marcus’s hand moved to the beige envelope.

It was subtle, but Ethan saw it. So did several guests near the front. The envelope stayed on Marcus’s lap, but his fingers tightened along its sealed edge as if it could protect him.

“I was the one in that crash,” Marcus said.

The line came out controlled.

Rehearsed.

Ethan had expected it.

He had heard it in interviews, charity videos, and news clips his grandmother kept turning off before he could ask questions. Marcus Hale: survivor. Marcus Hale: symbol. Marcus Hale: man who lost his mobility and rebuilt a purpose.

Ethan looked at the wheelchair wheels. The footrests. The polished frame. The way Marcus sat with perfect posture but kept one hand on the envelope as though the paper mattered more than the chair.

“No,” Ethan said.

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

The ballroom froze around them.

Ethan took one breath. His small chest rose beneath the beige polo. His bare toes pressed against the cold marble.

“My mother was.”

The words did not explode.

They landed.

A woman gasped softly. Another guest covered her mouth. Marcus’s face emptied of color so quickly that the chandelier light seemed too bright on him.
