CHAPTER 8: The Envelope Opens

No one touched Marcus.

No one needed to.

He stared at the beige envelope for several seconds, then gripped it with both hands. The paper bent under his fingers. Every guest watched. Ethan watched too, his small body rigid, his courage beginning to shake now that the hardest words had been spoken.

Marcus broke the seal.

Inside was a prepared speech and settlement announcement. A new funding initiative under his foundation. A dramatic donation meant to close the chapter on his accident story once and for all.

There was also a check.

A large one.

Made out to a victims’ assistance fund, not to Ethan, not to Natalie’s family, not to the people whose lives had actually been destroyed. Marcus suddenly understood the cruelty of it. He had been about to give money to a symbol while the real child of the crash stood outside the truth.

His voice cracked.

“I didn’t know your name.”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“You didn’t ask.”

The room absorbed that quietly.

Marcus looked toward the guests, then toward Ethan. His public mask was gone now. What remained was not enough, but it was realer than anything he had said that evening.

“I let them bury her.”

Ethan swallowed hard.

“My grandma says buried things still grow back.”

Marcus closed his eyes.
