CHAPTER 5: The Wheelchair Moves

Marcus pushed both hands against the wheelchair armrests.

The motion startled the room.

His black wheelchair stayed directly beneath him as he began to lift himself, not fully standing yet, but rising enough for disbelief to ripple through the guests. His body trembled with effort and panic. The envelope slid slightly but remained trapped beneath one tense hand on his lap.

Ethan did not move.

Marcus had not stood publicly in years.

That was part of his story.

The wheelchair was real, but the story around it was not. That made the moment hard for the room to understand. Truth is often messy when it enters a performance. Marcus had been injured, yes. He had suffered, yes. But suffering had not made him innocent.

He rose halfway, pale and shaken.

“Who sent you?” he asked.

Ethan looked up at him with quiet pain.

“Nobody sent me.”

“Then who told you those lies?”

“My grandmother told me what she signed. My mother’s friend told me what she saw. And the mechanic who fixed your car kept photos.”

Marcus froze.

The word photos moved through him like a blade.

Ethan continued, voice trembling but clear.

“Your family bought the truth, Mr. Hale.”

The ballroom went silent.

A champagne glass clicked softly against someone’s ring.
