CHAPTER 1: The Girl with the Milk

At two in the afternoon, Miller’s Corner Market looked like the safest kind of ordinary. Bright refrigerator lights. Snack shelves. A humming checkout counter. Old Mr. Miller behind the register. Three customers drifting through a slow weekday.

Then a little girl walked in carrying a newborn.

She could not have been older than eight. Pale face. Messy light-brown hair. Worn pink hoodie. In one arm she held a baby wrapped in a white blanket. In the other hand, pressed awkwardly against her side, was a small carton of milk.

She came straight to the counter.

“Please,” she whispered. “I just need milk for him.”

Mr. Miller stared at her, then at the baby, then toward the door as if a mother might rush in and explain everything. No one came.

“Where are your folks, sweetheart?” he asked gently.

The girl’s eyes filled, but she stayed upright. “My mom told me what to do.”

Before he could answer, the bell above the door rang again.

A man in a black business suit stepped inside, phone in hand, distracted and tired. Short brown hair touched with gray. Silver watch. Expensive shoes. He looked like the kind of man who belonged to offices, not corner stores.

The girl turned the second she saw him.

Everything in her changed. Fear remained, but now it had direction.

She held the baby closer and looked straight at the stranger.

“Please,” she said again, this time to him. “I need you to help us.”
