CHAPTER 3: Emma’s Letter
r. Miller quietly turned the sign on the door and locked it. No one objected.
In the tiny back office, Lucy sat down and fed Ben while Daniel unfolded the letter. Mr. Miller stayed near the doorway, close enough to protect the child if needed, far enough to give her dignity.
The handwriting was Emma’s.
Daniel,
If Lucy found you, I ran out of time.
I never told her much, only what she needed. She deserves the truth now.
Lucy is yours.
Ben is not, but he is hers, and that makes him family if you have a heart left to act like one.
I did not leave because I stopped loving you. I left because your mother threatened to bury me in court, call me unstable, and make sure I lost my baby before I ever had the chance to fight.
I was young, scared, and alone.
A year ago I tried to ask about you. After that, people started watching too closely. I stopped trusting anyone.
If this letter is in your hands, do one brave thing later than you should have.
Protect them.
Emma.
Daniel read it twice.
By the end, his face had changed completely.
“Lucy,” he said quietly, “how long have you been trying to find me?”
“Since this morning.”
