CHAPTER 8: Learning to Stay

Safety did not arrive all at once.

Lucy still hid crackers in her hoodie for a week. She still woke in the night to check whether Ben was breathing. She still asked permission before opening the refrigerator.

Daniel learned to answer with consistency instead of grand speeches. He took leave from work. He learned how Ben liked to be held after feeding. He learned that Lucy relaxed most when every promise was kept exactly as spoken.

Slowly, the apartment changed.

A crib replaced the pharmacy bassinet. Tiny socks appeared in the laundry. A pink toothbrush stood next to Daniel’s. Emma’s black-and-white photograph was framed and placed on the living-room shelf where nobody would ever hide it again.

One rainy evening Daniel found Lucy drawing at the kitchen table.

It was a picture of the convenience store: Mr. Miller at the register, Ben in a blanket, Lucy holding milk, and Daniel kneeling in front of her.

“You drew that day?” he asked.

She nodded. “You looked scared.”

“I was.”

“Me too.”

He sat beside her. “Do you still miss her all the time?”

Lucy didn’t ask who he meant.

“Yes,” she whispered. “But it hurts less when people say her name.”

So he did.

Emma.
