CHAPTER 2: The Photograph

The photo was worn nearly soft at the corners.

Daniel took it carefully.

At first he only saw two young people standing near an ocean boardwalk. Then his own face looked back at him from twenty years earlier—open, hopeful, unguarded.

And beside him was Emma Vale.

For a second, Daniel forgot how to breathe.

Emma’s hair was blowing across her cheek. She was smiling the way she used to smile before life got difficult. Daniel heard the old summer wind, the gulls, her laugh, and the promises they once made when they were too young to know how fear can ruin love.

“This was taken twenty years ago…” he said.

Lucy watched him carefully. “She was my mom.”

Daniel looked up.

And then he saw it.

Emma’s eyes in the girl’s face.

His own stillness in the way she held herself.

“Where is she?” he asked, though part of him already knew the answer would hurt.

Lucy swallowed. “She got sick. Before she died, she told me to take Ben, the picture, and find you.”

The store seemed to tilt.

Daniel had not spoken Emma’s name aloud in years. His mother had made sure of that. After their relationship fell apart, he told himself Emma chose to disappear. It was a lie polished by time.

Now a frightened child stood before him carrying proof that the past had not vanished.

Lucy reached into her pocket once more and brought out a folded letter.
