CHAPTER 1: The Man Everyone Mistook

Noah had been mistaken for staff from the moment he walked into the ballroom.
It was not difficult to understand why. He wore a white dress shirt, a black vest, and a black bow tie. He had no boutonniere, no champagne glass, no loud relatives claiming him as family.
He moved quietly, noticing problems before anyone else did.
When a waiter nearly dropped a tray, Noah caught one glass before it shattered.
When Ava’s veil snagged beneath a chair leg, Noah bent and freed it without making her look embarrassed.
When Caleb saw him near the bride, he saw only what arrogance allowed him to see.
A waiter.
A man beneath him.
Someone he could shame in front of witnesses and call it authority.
Noah sat beside the damaged cake, one palm against the floor, taking a slow breath. The frosting remained thick on his vest and cheek. The crushed cake did not repair itself. It sagged behind him like the party’s first honest decoration.
Ava whispered his name, but Caleb cut her off with one glare.
Noah’s voice stayed even.
“You really should have asked who I was.”
Caleb gave a short laugh, but it arrived too late and too thin.
Across the room, several guests exchanged looks. The man on the floor did not sound like an employee afraid of losing his job.
