CHAPTER 6: A Hotel Built on His Name
The Obsidian Resort had hosted presidents, film stars, heirs, scandals, and reconciliations expensive enough to appear charitable.
Everyone in the room knew the name.
Almost no one knew the family behind it.
Charles had designed it that way. His son Noah preferred anonymity even more. He had worked summers in kitchens, winters in accounting offices, and whole seasons learning how guests behaved when they did not know the owner’s blood was watching.
That was why Noah had noticed Caleb long before the cake.
He noticed the way Caleb snapped at waiters.
The way he accepted congratulations like payments owed.
The way he corrected Ava in small gestures too practiced to be accidental.
Noah had not planned to interfere.
Until Ava nearly fainted beside the cake table and Caleb was too busy arguing with a photographer to notice.
Noah stepped in because she was falling.
Caleb saw only another man’s hand near his bride.
And now the entire ballroom understood that what Caleb called protection was really possession dressed in a tuxedo.
Charles had taught Noah that luxury was not marble or chandeliers.
Luxury was safety.
A room that made people afraid to breathe had already failed.
