CHAPTER 9: The Owner of the Obsidian

Noah stood in the center of the ballroom with frosting drying on his cheek.
The ruined wedding cake leaned behind him like a monument to every person Caleb had ever thought he could push aside.
Charles remained at his back, cold and still, not rescuing his son from embarrassment but standing with him inside it.
Caleb’s confidence had collapsed completely now. He looked from Noah to Charles, then around at guests who no longer seemed impressed by his tuxedo, his family name, or his anger.
“I didn’t know,” Caleb said.
Noah met his eyes.
“That’s the problem.”
Ava stood a few feet away, veil lowered, tiara abandoned, heartbroken but awake.
Noah wiped one last streak of frosting from his cheek and let his hand fall to his side.
Then he said the line that ended the room’s last illusion.
“My father owns the Obsidian Resort.”
Silence followed.
Not the polite silence of wealth.
The heavy kind. The kind that arrives when a room full of people realizes they watched the truth happen and cannot pretend they missed it.
The chandeliers kept shining. The marble floor kept reflecting the wreckage.
And beside the ruined cake, Caleb finally understood that the man he shoved was never beneath him.
He had only been quiet.
Ava looked once at the wedding tables, then at the open doors.
For the first time all night, leaving felt like choosing herself instead of losing someone else.
