CHAPTER 1: The Rule and the Wound

The lieutenant’s name was Aaron Miles.

He was thirty, clean-cut, proud of his uniform, and deeply afraid of failing the institution that had given his life structure. He saw rules as walls against chaos. He saw exceptions as cracks. And standing in front of him was a man who, by appearance alone, seemed like a crack.

Frank did not argue.

He only lowered his eyes and said, “I just came to eat with my boys.”

The words were soft enough that some soldiers almost missed them. But the young Black soldier seated at the third table heard every syllable.

Specialist Marcus Reed looked up from his plate.

Something in the old man’s voice pulled at him.

The lieutenant did not hear pain. He heard a boundary being tested.

“Then you can do it outside,” Miles said.

A few soldiers shifted uncomfortably. Someone set down a fork. The food line worker looked away.

Frank stood still for a moment, tray in hand, as if the sentence had reached farther back than the dining hall. Then he slowly stepped to the stainless counter and set the tray down. He placed it carefully, almost respectfully, like a man setting down something heavier than food.

The tray stayed there.

Frank’s hands fell to his sides.

“I’m not trying to cause a problem, Lieutenant.”

“Then follow the policy.”

There it was again. Policy. Clean word. Safe word. The kind of word people use when they don’t want to see the person standing in front of them.

Frank glanced toward the tables where young soldiers in OCP uniforms watched in silence.

For a second, he saw different faces.

Boys in jungle mud. Boys with dry lips. Boys laughing too loud because fear was nearby. Boys he had fed from his own rations when supply lines broke.

His boys.

Most of them never grew old enough to be turned away from a dining hall.
