CHAPTER 4: The Salute

Marcus Reed rose fully from the background table.

His chair scraped the floor, loud in the silence. The sound made everyone turn, but Marcus barely noticed. His eyes were locked on the medal pinned inside the veteran’s vest.

He had studied that medal at basic training. Every soldier had. The Medal of Honor was not decoration. It was history made physical. It was sacrifice so extreme the nation had no ordinary language for it.

Marcus walked forward.

Not rushed. Not dramatic. Just certain.

Lieutenant Miles turned toward him, maybe to stop him, maybe to ask what he thought he was doing. But Marcus was already there, three steps from Frank Callahan, standing straight in his OCP uniform.

His expression had changed from confusion to shock, then to something deeper.

Respect.

“Lieutenant,” Marcus said, his voice steady but quiet, “that’s a Medal of Honor.”

A young private at the back table stood. Then another. Then two more. Chairs shifted. Boots settled against the floor.

Marcus snapped into a crisp salute.

For one second, Frank looked almost wounded by it.

Not offended. Not proud in the usual sense. Wounded because respect, when withheld too long and returned suddenly, can feel like grief reopening.

The lieutenant stared from the medal to the old man.

All his certainty had nowhere to stand now.

Frank did not salute back at first. His hand remained near the open vest, as if closing it might return the room to what it had been and leaving it open might expose too much of his life.

Then, slowly, he lifted his hand.

Not sharply.

Age had taken that.

But not dignity.
