CHAPTER 7: Sitting with His Boys

Marcus was the first to pull out a chair.

Frank looked at him, then at the seat, then at the circle of soldiers standing nearby as if waiting for permission to breathe.

“You don’t need to make a parade of it,” Frank said.

Marcus lowered his hand from the salute. “No, sir.”

“You got a name?”

“Specialist Marcus Reed.”

Frank nodded. “Sit down, Specialist Reed. You’re making me nervous.”

A few soldiers laughed softly. The tension eased, but only enough to let feeling enter the room.

Frank sat.

He placed the tray in front of him. Cold eggs. Toast. Coffee. A simple meal. He stared at it for a moment, and Marcus realized the old man was not really there for food.

He was there for the sound of soldiers eating.

For the scrape of chairs. For the low jokes. For the clatter of trays. For the strange comfort of being among people who might understand pieces of him without needing the full story.

Lieutenant Miles stood several feet away, uncertain whether to leave or apologize. The colonel gave him a look that said the choice was his, and therefore the burden was too.

Miles stepped forward slowly.

“Mr. Callahan,” he said, voice rough, “I was wrong.”

Frank looked up.

Miles continued. “I judged you before I knew you. I used rules to cover an assumption. I’m sorry.”

The dining hall went quiet again, but this time it was not waiting for punishment.

It was waiting for grace.

Frank studied the young officer for a long moment.

Then he said, “Don’t apologize to the medal.”

Miles looked confused.

Frank tapped his own chest lightly. “Apologize to the man.”

Miles straightened, ashamed in the right way now.

“Mr. Callahan,” he said, “I am sorry.”

Frank nodded once.

Not forgiveness fully.

But a door left unlocked.
