CHAPTER 4: The Door Opens

The main penthouse door stood at the far end of the room, framed by warm hall light and polished dark wood.
When it opened, it did not slam or burst.
It opened the way power usually enters—quietly, with no need to announce itself twice.
Charles Whitmore appeared outside first, black overcoat over his suit, expression carved into something colder than anger.
Two lawyers stepped in behind him, each carrying a closed black folder.
Mark turned too quickly, as if he had hoped the sound at the door would be anything else.
Charles crossed the threshold and took in the entire room in one glance: Emily on the floor, the broken glass, the rose, Mark’s loosened tie, and the phone still in his daughter’s hand.
Then he said, “He already did.”
Mark stared at him. “What?”
Charles did not look away from Emily.
“You said I couldn’t touch you,” he replied. “I already did.”
