One of the lawyers finally opened his folder.
He did not wave papers around. He did not need to. The sound of the clasp opening was enough.
Emily remained on the floor, propped now on one elbow, while the lawyer spoke in a steady voice about emergency resolutions, suspended credit lines, partner withdrawals, regulatory notifications, and immediate asset freezes.
Calder Ridge Capital was finished before Mark even understood the first sentence.
Charles had not made a threat.
He had made a report.
The second lawyer added that Whitmore Holdings had withdrawn every backing arrangement connected to Mark’s expansion deal that afternoon, after certain financial irregularities were independently verified.
Emily closed her eyes for one second.
She had sent those records to her father a week ago and prayed she was wrong.
She had not been wrong.
Mark looked from one man to the other, waiting for someone to smile, to reveal it was pressure, negotiation, leverage.
But no one smiled.
That was when his face lost color.
