CHAPTER 9: Before You Lost Me

Charles remained a few steps behind her, flanked by the silent legal team with their black folders closed again.
Mark stood alone now, though no one had touched him.
That was the brutal thing about some endings.
They remove a man without moving him.
Emily lifted her chin despite the bruise on her cheek and the cut on her lip.
She was hurt, but she was no longer cornered.
She looked at Mark and gave him the truth he had earned.
“You lost the company before you lost me.”
The line settled over the room with the weight of something final.
Mark’s expression collapsed from anger into recognition. He knew then that the worst part was not the firm, the investors, or the legal collapse waiting outside that door.
The worst part was that Emily had seen him completely and chosen not to stay.
No one spoke after that.
The city lights burned through the glass wall. The floor lamp glowed. The broken glass and fallen rose remained where they were.
And in the heavy silence of the penthouse, everything that mattered had already been decided.
