CHAPTER 1: The Red Screen Behind Her

The boardroom sat above Manhattan like a glass cage.

At night, every window reflected the people inside more clearly than the city outside.

Grace Monroe stood at the head of the long black table in a white silk blouse and beige trousers, her hands steady even though her mouth tasted of copper.

Behind her, a red projection glowed across the wall: merger numbers, falling lines, a deal about to die.

Grant Whitmore, her husband and the youngest CEO Vance Meridian had ever appointed, looked at the board as if Grace were a stain he could wipe away.

“She misled us,” he said.

No one moved.

A director shifted in his leather chair. Another looked down at his watch. They had all learned that silence was safer when Grant needed someone smaller to blame.

Grace lifted her chin.

Grant stepped close enough for the room to see the anger on his face.

His hand rose once.

The sound was not loud, but the room changed around it.

Grace turned back slowly, one hand touching the corner of her mouth.

The red screen burned behind her like evidence.

No one reached for the door. No one asked if she was all right.

That was the moment Grace understood the entire room had already chosen comfort over decency before Grant ever raised his hand.
