CHAPTER 9: The Woman at the Head of the Table

After Grant and Marissa were escorted out, the boardroom looked strangely larger.
The chairs remained. The table remained. The skyline remained indifferent behind the glass.
Only the fear had moved.
Grace stood alone at the head of the table, a tissue folded in her hand, her shoulders squared beneath the white blouse everyone had mistaken for softness.
Arthur waited near the doors.
He did not take the chair meant for power.
He looked at his daughter and let the room understand who had earned it.
The chairman cleared his throat.
“Mrs. Whitmore, perhaps we should adjourn.”
Grace looked at him until he corrected himself.
“Ms. Monroe,” he said quietly.
She nodded once.
Then she walked to Grant’s empty chair and placed the black folder in front of it.
“No,” she said. “We are not adjourning.”
Outside, the city lights trembled against the glass like a thousand witnesses.
Grace pressed the tissue once to her mouth, then set it down beside the evidence.
“You all had no trouble meeting while I was being blamed,” she said. “Now you can stay while I take the company back.”
No one spoke.
And this time, their silence belonged to her.
Her father’s reflection appeared in the glass behind her, still and proud, but he did not speak for her.
He had come to open the door. Grace would decide what walked through it.
