CHAPTER 1: The Wife They Kept Beneath the Table

For three years, Grace had entered Vance Meridian through side doors.
At charity dinners, she was introduced as Grant’s quiet wife. At investor weekends, she was placed beside the flowers. In photographs, she stood half a step behind him, smiling because it was easier than correcting every lie in the room.
Grant liked that arrangement.
His board liked it too.
A quiet wife did not ask why entire subsidiaries vanished on paper. A quiet wife did not ask why a shell company kept appearing beside Marissa Vale’s signature. A quiet wife did not notice when money moved faster than excuses.
Grace had noticed everything.
She had noticed Grant staying late with Marissa, the legal director who wore diamonds too bright for her salary.
She had noticed the way Grant stopped touching his wedding ring during meetings.
Most of all, she noticed the way men spoke more freely when they believed the woman listening had no authority.
That belief was the only gift they ever gave her.
Tonight, Grant had dragged her into the boardroom to destroy her in public.
He still did not understand he had finally put her exactly where she needed to be.
Her father had once warned her that inherited power attracted two kinds of men: those who wanted to borrow it and those who wanted to punish her for having it.
Grant had managed to become both.
