Grant found his voice, but not his confidence.
“Arthur, this is a private board meeting.”
Arthur walked to the table and placed a thin black folder in front of the chairman.
“No,” he said. “It is an emergency session of a company whose controlling debt was purchased this afternoon.”
The chairman opened the folder with the caution of a man touching fire.
Grace watched comprehension move around the table like a storm under glass.
For years, Grant had boasted that Vance Meridian owed no man loyalty.
That was almost true.
It owed a trust.
A quiet, old-money fund hidden behind three legal entities, the kind of structure people like Grant mocked because they could not charm it, threaten it, or invite it to dinner.
The fund belonged to the Monroe family.
Grace had never told Grant because she wanted to be loved without a balance sheet attached to her name.
Grant stared at her now as if she had deceived him by not announcing how much power he had been insulting over breakfast.
“You knew?” he whispered.
Grace touched the phone in her palm.
“I knew who I was,” she said. “You forgot.”
The chairman’s fingers trembled over the first page.
He had served billionaires, founders, widows, heirs, and men who confused private jets with vision. But he knew old capital when it entered a room without raising its voice.
