CHAPTER 1: The Woman on the Marble
Ava stayed on one knee for only a moment.
Not because she was weak.
Because she was deciding what kind of silence the room deserved.
Benjamin had expected embarrassment. He wanted a scene he could control: a shaken woman, a few uncomfortable guests, a staff member apologizing to him instead of her.
He had spent the morning treating employees like furniture and the afternoon treating Ava like an interruption. He believed manners were for people he respected, and respect was something he gave only to money he recognized.
Ava slowly rose.
Her cheek had turned red where his hand had landed. She did not cover it again. She let the room see what he had done.
Benjamin gave a small smile, pleased by the stunned faces around them.
“Security should have removed you before I had to,” he said.
Ava looked past him toward the revolving doors.
Her voice was quiet.
“Call my father.”
The words were not loud.
That made them worse.
