CHAPTER 5: The Name Above the Door

Ava had grown up being taught that the most powerful family names were often the quietest ones.
Her father owned hotels the way other men owned watches. He rarely appeared in magazines. He hated public speeches. He bought failing properties, rebuilt them, and left the world guessing who had saved them.
The Grand Aurelia was his favorite.
It was also Ava’s inheritance.
Benjamin knew the hotel belonged to a private Carter holding company. He had bragged about knowing that much over drinks the night before. He simply had not imagined that the woman questioning his cruelty in the lobby might be connected to the name on every hidden deed.
Marcus remained behind Ava, close enough to protect her, far enough to let her stand for herself.
Benjamin swallowed.
“This is a misunderstanding,” he said.
Ava looked at the phone still in his right hand.
“No,” she replied. “It was a demonstration.”
Guests shifted silently.
The staff did not move.
Everyone was waiting for the man in the cream suit to realize what the marble beneath him already knew.
