CHAPTER 1: The Slap Beneath the Chandelier
The dining room went silent before the sound finished moving through it.
One moment, Isabella Hart was standing beside her chair in an ivory dress, her fingers resting lightly on the carved back. The next, her cheek burned under her mother’s hand while every silver fork around the table froze in midair.
Above them, the chandelier kept glowing like nothing improper had happened.
It was an old Hart chandelier, imported from Venice before Isabella was born, and every crystal in it caught her humiliation from a different angle.
Celeste Hart lowered her palm with the calm of a woman who believed shame was something she could assign to other people.
“You will not embarrass this family at your father’s memorial dinner,” she said.
Isabella touched her cheek, not to hide the mark, but to steady herself.
Across the long mahogany table, uncles, cousins, and board friends looked into their wine glasses. No one stood. No one asked if she was all right.
Her brother Preston leaned back with a small, satisfied breath.
Then the double doors at the far end of the room opened.
A man in a gray suit stepped in from the dark terrace, carrying a black leather briefcase.
Celeste turned sharply.
The man looked at Isabella first.
“Miss Hart,” he said, “I am afraid there has been a mistake.”
