CHAPTER 5: The Mistake in the Will
Whitaker did not raise his voice.
That made the mistake sound less like confusion and more like indictment.
“The error,” he said, “is not in Mr. Hart’s final will. It is in the version your family has chosen to present to Miss Hart.”
Celeste went still.
Isabella heard the rain against the windows. She heard someone’s bracelet tap against porcelain. She heard Preston breathe through his mouth like a boy caught opening a locked drawer.
Whitaker placed the sealed folder in front of Isabella.
“Your father did not disinherit you.”
Celeste’s eyes flashed. “Edward.”
He continued anyway.
“He named you controlling trustee of the Hart Family Trust, acting chair of Hart Meridian Holdings, and sole protector of the charitable foundation until the board confirms transition.”
The words did not land all at once.
They passed through the room like a slow current, touching each person in the order of what they had hoped to gain.
They moved down the table slowly, face by face, ruining every private calculation.
Isabella stared at the folder.
For a moment, she was not powerful. She was simply a daughter realizing her father had defended her from beyond the grave.
