CHAPTER 6: The Daughter They Tried to Erase
Celeste recovered first because pride was the only reflex she had left.
She touched the pearls at her throat, not because they were tight, but because she needed something expensive between her fingers while the room slipped away.
“August would never put her above Preston,” she said.
Whitaker opened the folder and removed a single page.
“He explained why.”
Isabella did not ask him to read it aloud. She was not sure she could survive hearing her father’s voice turned into legal language in front of people who had let her stand alone.
But Whitaker read only one sentence.
“My daughter Isabella has protected this family’s name more faithfully in silence than others have in public.”
The room shifted.
Preston looked down.
Celeste’s jaw trembled once, then hardened.
“She is a child.”
“She is twenty-four,” Whitaker said. “And she has been reviewing acquisition risk, foundation audits, and board correspondence for three years under Mr. Hart’s direct authority.”
Isabella felt every eye return to her.
This time, they did not see the daughter at the wrong end of the table.
They saw the person August had been training while they were busy underestimating her.
