CHAPTER 1: The Daughter at the Wrong End of the Table

Isabella had been seated near the kitchen doors that night.
The placement was subtle enough for guests to call accidental and precise enough for Isabella to understand exactly what her mother meant.
Not beside her mother. Not beside Preston. Not near the empty chair at the head of the table where her father used to sit with one hand around a glass of water and the other tapping lightly against quarterly reports.
Celeste had called it tradition.
Isabella knew it was placement.
Since August Hart’s funeral, every room in the mansion had been rearranged to make her smaller. Her bedroom was moved to the east wing. Her name vanished from charity invitations. The staff began asking Celeste before they brought Isabella coffee.
At dinner, the family spoke around her as if grief had made her transparent.
Preston discussed the foundation. Aunt Margaret discussed the Newport house. Celeste discussed “stability” with men who had once called August a genius and now called his widow practical.
Then a red leather folder appeared beside Isabella’s plate.
“Sign it tonight,” Celeste said.
Isabella read only the first line before her stomach tightened.
It was not a condolence document.
The pages had already been marked where she was expected to sign, as if her grief were simply another appointment in Celeste’s schedule.
It was a release.
