CHAPTER 4: Chapter 4 - The Joke That Wasn't Funny

Ethan held his mother carefully, one arm around her shoulders, the other steadying her elbow. He could feel how hard she was shaking.
"Mom," he said softly, "look at me."
Margaret tried to wipe her face. "Ethan, honey, I did not know you were coming today."
"I know." His voice remained calm. "That was the point."
Vanessa forced a laugh. It sounded thin and desperate. "Okay, this looks terrible, but it is not what you think. We were joking around. Margaret got emotional, that is all. You know how she can be."
No one in the room moved.
Ethan turned his head slowly toward Vanessa. His eyes were not wild. They were not full of rage. They were steady, and that made the air feel heavier.
"A joke?" he asked.
Vanessa nodded too quickly. "Yes. A stupid family thing. We were talking about the wedding, and your mother took something personally. I told her to apologize because she was being dramatic, and then she knelt down on her own."
Aunt Linda gasped. "That is a lie."
Vanessa's eyes flashed. "Stay out of this, Linda."
Ethan looked at his aunt. "What happened?"
Linda's lips trembled with anger. "Vanessa said your mother was ruining the wedding. She said once you married her, Margaret would not be allowed to make decisions about this house, your holidays, or your money. Your mother asked her to stop, and Vanessa told her to apologize on her knees."
Vanessa slammed her glass onto the coffee table. "I said stay out of it."
Ethan did not raise his voice.
"No," he said. "Everyone is going to stay exactly where they are. I want to hear the truth.
