CHAPTER 9: Chapter 9 - The Door She Walked Out Of

Vanessa stared at him as if waiting for the real Ethan to return, the Ethan who apologized first, explained himself gently, and tried to fix every uncomfortable moment. But that man had not disappeared. He had simply learned where kindness ended and weakness began.
Slowly, Vanessa pulled the ring from her finger.
For one second, she held it in her palm like proof that she still owned part of him. Then she placed it on the coffee table with a sharp click.
"You will regret this," she said.
Ethan did not answer.
That seemed to anger her more than any insult could have. She grabbed her purse, brushed past Mark, and headed for the front door. On the porch, she turned back.
"Your mother will never let you have a life," she said. "One day you will see that."
Ethan stood beside Margaret, tall and steady.
"My mother gave me a life," he said. "You tried to make me ashamed of it."
Vanessa's eyes filled with a kind of panic she could not hide. Then she stepped outside. The door closed behind her.
No one spoke for several seconds.
The house seemed to exhale.
Mrs. Campbell began crying. Aunt Linda put both arms around Margaret. Mark picked up Ethan's duffel bag from the floor and set it gently by the sofa, as if even that deserved respect after what had happened.
Ethan took the ring from the coffee table and slipped it into his pocket. Not because he wanted it back, but because he did not want his mother to keep looking at it.
Then he turned to her.
"I am home," he said.
