CHAPTER 6: Chapter 6 - The Ring on Her Finger

Vanessa lifted her left hand so the diamond caught the light.
"Before you do something emotional," she said, "remember what this means. We are engaged, Ethan. We have deposits paid. Invitations are printed. People know. You cannot just throw us away because your mother cried."
Ethan stared at the ring. Now that promise lay broken on the living room carpet.
"You are right," Ethan said.
Vanessa blinked. "I am?"
"The ring does mean something." He stepped closer, still calm. "It means I trusted you. It means I believed you would become part of this family, not tear it apart. It means I thought you understood respect."
Her lips tightened. "Respect goes both ways. Your mother treated me like some outsider."
Margaret shook her head. "I tried to welcome you. I gave you my mother's pearls for the rehearsal dinner."
Vanessa rolled her eyes. "Old pearls. Like that was some grand gift."
A murmur moved through the room.
Ethan's face changed then. Not dramatically, not enough for Vanessa to use it against him, but enough for everyone to see the final thread snap.
"Those pearls belonged to my grandmother," he said. "They were the only thing my mother had from her."
Vanessa looked away.
"Take off the ring," Ethan said.
The words were quiet, but they landed like a door slamming shut.
