CHAPTER 5: The Papers Daniel Hid

Daniel believed Nora had no legal plan because he mistook silence for confusion.

That mistake had taken years to build.

Whenever Nora asked about money, he overwhelmed her with account names. Whenever she asked about childcare decisions, he accused her of mistrusting him. Whenever she objected to Margaret’s interference, he said she was isolating him from family.

The week before dinner, Nora found drafts on Daniel’s laptop because Caleb spilled juice and Daniel shouted loudly enough that he forgot the screen unlocked.

Emergency Petition for Temporary Custody.

Marital Asset Preservation.

Parental Instability Statement.

Nora read the phrases while Caleb cried in the high chair.

The petition claimed she had threatened to leave the state without warning.

That part was not true yet.

It claimed she was financially irresponsible.

False.

It claimed Daniel feared for Caleb’s stability because Nora lacked family support nearby.

That was only true because Daniel had spent two years making her feel guilty for visiting anyone who loved her.

Attached to the draft were text messages Daniel edited out of context, notes from Margaret describing Nora as “overwhelmed,” and a letter from Daniel’s therapist, who had never met Nora but described Daniel as a concerned husband.

Nora photographed everything.

Then she smiled at dinner two nights later and let Daniel believe the trap was still his.
