CHAPTER 9: I Packed Last Night

The evening air touched Nora’s face like water.

Behind her, the dining room remained frozen around the passport and boarding pass.

Daniel stood beside the table, one hand resting near the wineglass he had threatened with his own anger. Margaret stood behind him, furious and frightened. Arthur remained near his chair, watching the doorway as if seeing the family clearly for the first time.

Nora turned once.

Not for Daniel.

For the room.

“I packed last night,” she said.

Her voice carried through the doorway.

Daniel’s face changed.

Until then, part of him believed this was a performance. A tactic. A punishment he could reverse if he apologized correctly or threatened harder.

Packed meant closets were already empty.

Packed meant the diaper bag was gone.

Packed meant her absence had been organized while he slept in the same bed, certain control was the same as safety.

Margaret spoke first.

“You will regret humiliating this family.”

Nora gave her a tired smile.

“No. I regret staying long enough to learn how.”

Arthur lowered his head.

Caleb reached toward the porch flag moving in the breeze.

Nora shifted him higher and walked down the steps.

She did not run.

Freedom did not need to look panicked to be real.
