CHAPTER 8: The Open Door

The patio door had been open all evening because Margaret liked dinner to look effortless.

A warm breeze moved through the dining room. Beyond the porch, Nora’s sister’s car waited at the curb with headlights off. Tessa sat in the driver’s seat three blocks away, ready to come if Daniel escalated.

Nora had arranged everything.

A bag for Caleb was already in the trunk.

Her laptop and business files had been copied.

The pediatric records were uploaded.

Her emergency credit card was active.

The passport and boarding pass on the table were not the escape.

They were the announcement that the escape had already happened internally.

Daniel had lost the moment Nora stopped hoping he would understand before she protected herself.

She stepped toward the door.

Daniel whispered, “Nora.”

Not angry now.

Small.

She paused but did not turn fully.

He looked from her to the passport.

“You were really going to leave without telling me?”

She answered, “You moved our money without telling me. You hid my passport without telling me. You drafted custody papers without telling me.”

Caleb’s fingers curled around her necklace.

Nora kissed his hair.

“So yes, Daniel. I learned from the house I lived in.”

Then she stepped onto the porch.
