CHAPTER 12: Adrian Runs Out of Distance
Adrian tried to leave before his name reached the microphone.
He moved toward the side aisle with the polished calm he used after dinner arguments and failed projections. He had always believed exits were part of ownership. Every room he entered contained a door waiting to protect him from consequence.
Elara's voice stopped him halfway.
Adrian, sit down.
He turned slowly. You do not get to command me.
No, she said. The subpoena does.
A woman from the back wall stepped forward then, not a reporter, not a neighbor, not one of the mayor's aides. She wore a gray suit and carried a federal badge in a leather case that she opened only long enough for the right people to understand the morning had moved beyond local favors.
Special Agent Maren Cole had been in the room since the doors opened.
Adrian saw her and lost the practiced softness from his face.
Elara had not come alone after all.
She had simply arrived without announcing who was willing to stand behind the truth once it was spoken.
