CHAPTER 7: The Woman They Forgot Had a Record
Adrian stood then, because powerful men often mistake movement for leadership.
Elara, stop this before you make it worse, he said.
She turned toward him. The room felt the temperature drop around her silence.
Adrian had built a public life on the idea that he had rescued Elara from obscurity. He let magazines call her shy. He let investors call her supportive. He let his mother call her decorative. None of them knew she had been the youngest crisis director Harlan Compliance ever hired, or that she had trained federal auditors to read the room before the files.
Elara had hidden nothing. Adrian had simply never cared to learn what did not flatter him.
My record is why you married me, she said. You needed my name on clean audits when your first bridge loan failed.
The reporters in the back row lifted their cameras higher.
Adrian's mouth tightened.
Mayor Rusk tried again. Mrs. Voss, you assaulted an officer.
Elara looked at Holt's cap on the floor. No, Mayor. Your officer assaulted the truth before he reached me. I only made him miss.
