CHAPTER 11: Mira Opens the Locked Name
Elliot turned to Mira with the papers still in his hand.
"Why did you not come to me?"
The question sounded almost gentle, and that made it harder to answer.
Mira looked around the room. At the trustees. At Isadora. At the guests who had watched a child sob before deciding whether it was safe to care.
"I tried," she said. "Your appointments moved. Your assistant said family issues went through Mrs. Alden. My badge stopped opening the nursery floor. When I left messages, she answered them before you did."
Elliot remembered missed calls he had been told were vendor problems. He remembered Leo becoming quiet whenever he asked about home. He remembered Isadora saying children grew out of tenderness if fathers did not encourage weakness.
Mira's voice shook only once.
"I was afraid that if I pushed too hard, she would send me away and he would think I chose to leave."
Leo lifted his face. "You didn't leave?"
Mira knelt to him.
"Never because I wanted to."
