CHAPTER 14: A Last Order for the South Doors
Isadora left through the south doors because Elliot would not let her use the staircase built for photographs.
She did not go quietly at first. She spoke of misunderstanding, stress, image, donors, and how easily a child could be manipulated by affection. Each word made the attorney beside Elliot write faster.
At the threshold, she turned toward Mira.
"You think this makes you family?"
Mira had spent years fearing that exact question. Tonight, with Leo's hand in hers and Elliot finally standing beside the truth instead of above it, the question lost its teeth.
"No," Mira said. "He did that before any of you gave me a title."
Isadora looked to Elliot for the rescue she had once commanded from him with a lifted eyebrow.
He gave none.
Security opened the doors. Rain waited beyond the portico, turning the city lights into silver scars.
Isadora stepped out without applause, without cameras approved by her office, without the boy she had treated like a prop.
The south doors closed behind her with a quiet finality that sounded almost kind.
