CHAPTER 4: The Waitress With a Forbidden Name
Mira Lane had not always worn a service uniform inside Alden House.
Five years earlier, she had entered through the front doors as a private neonatal nurse after Elliot's first wife died in childbirth. The nursery had been too quiet, the father too devastated, and the newborn too small to understand that grief had already taken half his family.
Mira stayed for one month. Then three. Then a year.
She learned Leo's hungry cry from his frightened cry. She sang him through fevers. She slept on the floor beside his crib when storms rattled the glass roof. She knew the lullaby his mother had recorded and the way he reached for light when he woke afraid.
Then Elliot remarried Isadora, and Mira became inconvenient.
First she was moved from nursery care to household work. Then from household work to event staff. Then she was told never to let Leo call her by the name he had given her before he could say anything else.
Mommy was not a title she had stolen.
It was the first safe word Leo ever knew.
