CHAPTER 15: The Chandelier Learns His Name

After Isadora left, the gala could not continue, and no one was foolish enough to suggest it should.
Guests gathered coats in subdued clusters. The quartet packed its instruments. Champagne went untouched beneath the tower that had nearly witnessed Mira's tray fall and did not.
Elliot stood beside Leo and Mira under the largest chandelier.
For years, that light had been used to photograph the Aldens as a perfect family. Tonight it showed something messier and more honest: a father shaken awake, a child finally believed, and a woman in a server's uniform holding more authority than every diamond in the room.
"What happens now?" Mira asked softly.
Elliot looked at his son before answering.
"Now I stop letting other people tell me what my house feels like."
Leo leaned against Mira, exhausted but no longer hiding his face.
Elliot held out his hand to him. Not a command. An invitation.
Leo took it slowly, keeping his other hand in Mira's.
Together, the three of them crossed the ballroom floor while the chandelier burned above them, bright enough at last to reveal who had truly been family all along.
