CHAPTER 5: The Bottle From the Nightstand

The vial was small enough to disappear in a woman's palm.
Clear glass. Silver cap. A pale residue clinging to the inside. No label, no pharmacy number, no name printed in clean medical ink.
It looked ordinary in the most terrifying way. Not dramatic. Not theatrical. Just a small object that could sit beside a bed for weeks while a wife smiled and servants carried trays past it.
Daniel had hidden it in the hollow leg of Lily's dollhouse, because adults never searched where children kept imaginary kitchens.
Lily explained this in pieces, each sentence pulled from her like thread.
Her father had started sleeping too deeply. He had forgotten meetings. His hands had trembled in the mornings. Mara had called it stress and poured drops into his tea with the patience of a nurse.
Daniel had smiled for guests and told Lily not to worry.
Then one night he had knelt beside her bed and placed the vial in her hand.
"If I stop waking up," he had told her, "take this to my father. Not to Mara. Not to anyone who works in the house. To my father."
Lydia closed her eyes for one breath.
The cruelty was not only that Daniel had been afraid.
It was that he had trusted a child with proof because every adult around him had already been bought, charmed, or silenced.
The family attorney wrapped it in his handkerchief because no evidence bag had been brought to a burial. No one had expected the funeral to become the first crime scene.
