CHAPTER 3: Daniel's Last Instruction

The girl's name was Lily Hart, though no one had spoken it at the service.
She was the daughter Daniel had never been allowed to claim publicly. Not because he was ashamed of her, but because he had been trapped in a marriage where every truth became a weapon.
Lydia had met Lily only twice before Daniel died.
Daniel had spent the last year building quiet walls inside a public life. Different phones. Private school payments. A storage unit no one knew about. He had been preparing for something, but Lydia had been too polite to force the answer.
The first time, Daniel had brought her to the stables and said the child was the daughter of a former employee who needed help with school. The second time, he had looked at Lydia across the dinner table and said, too softly for Mara to hear, "Mom, one day I need you to trust me without a full explanation."
Now Lily stood beside the coffin with rain on her lashes and terror in her small hands.
"He said not to give it to her," Lily whispered.
Mara's fingers tightened around the stem of her umbrella.
Lydia lowered herself to the child's eye level, ignoring the wet grass soaking the hem of her black dress.
"Who did Daniel tell you to give it to?" she asked.
Lily looked toward the oldest man at the grave.
"Mr. Whitmore," she said. "The angry one."
