CHAPTER 8: The Child No One Invited

Lily had not been invited to the funeral.
No chair had been placed for her. No program carried her name. The framed photograph at the entrance showed Daniel alone, cropped from a family picture where Lily's hand had once held his sleeve.
That truth spread through the cemetery like cold water.
Daniel's daughter had stood outside the gates until the old gardener recognized her and let her in. She had walked alone through rain, past strangers in black coats, carrying proof against a woman everyone kept calling family.
Lydia crouched in front of her again.
"Did anyone know you were coming?" she asked.
Lily shook her head.
"Daddy said not to call first. He said grown-ups can clean rooms before people arrive."
Arthur turned away as if the sentence had struck him in the chest.
Mara whispered, "This is insane."
But her voice had lost its polish.
Lydia removed her own black wool coat and wrapped it around Lily's shoulders, covering the child's white dress and the rain marks on her sleeves.
"You are not alone anymore," Lydia said.
Lily looked at the coffin, then at Lydia.
"Did I do it right?"
Lydia held her gently.
"You saved what he was trying to protect."
The coat swallowed Lily whole, but she did not pull away from it. That was how Lydia knew the child had been cold for a very long time.
