CHAPTER 11: The Little Girl Chooses the Hand That Stayed

A concierge arrived with a cream cardigan and a folded towel, both offered with the care adults use when they understand they failed too late.
Clara accepted the towel but did not let go of Victor's hand.
Julian knelt in front of her. His face had changed, stripped of public composure and left with the frightened honesty of a father seeing his child choose safety elsewhere.
'Clara,' he said, 'I am sorry.'
The girl looked at him through wet lashes.
'Why didn't you say it was mean?' she asked.
No accusation in her voice could have been sharper than that question.
Julian's mouth opened, but no answer came quickly enough.
Maren placed a hand on Clara's shoulder. She did not rescue Julian from the silence. Some silences were deserved.
Finally he said, 'Because I was afraid of making the room angry.'
Clara looked around at the tables, the flowers, the chandeliers, the adults who had been too quiet.
'The room was already angry,' she whispered. 'It was just angry at me.'
