CHAPTER 15: The Ballroom Keeps One True Story

Near midnight, Clara walked through the front doors wearing the cream cardigan over her stained dress.
Maren held one hand. Victor held the other. Julian followed a few steps behind, carrying the white ribbon that had fallen from her hair and saying nothing because silence, for once, was not being used against anyone.
Outside, camera flashes waited beyond the awning, hungry for scandal. Victor's security stepped forward, but Clara surprised them by lifting her chin.
'Do they know I didn't spill it?' she asked.
Maren squeezed her hand.
'They will.'
Clara thought about that, then nodded with the solemn authority of a child rebuilding a world in small pieces.
Behind them, the Ashford Ballroom still glowed. The roses remained white. The chandeliers still glittered over polished floors and abandoned champagne glasses.
But the room had changed. It no longer held Adelaide's version, or the guests' cowardice, or Julian's pause as the only record of the night.
It held a clearer story now: a little girl had been made to cry beneath gold lights, and her mother had refused to let silence be the family inheritance.
That was the story the ballroom kept.
