CHAPTER 5: The Mother Who Stopped Apologizing

Maren had married into the Whitcombs with a smile they called graceful and a surname they treated like an old rumor.
They knew her father had money, but they spoke of it as if it belonged to a distant branch of her life, a polite convenience rather than the foundation under their current luxury.
They accepted invitations to clubs he owned. They used bankers he introduced. They hosted fundraisers in buildings he kept open. Then they returned to their dining room and spoke of Maren as if Julian had rescued her from obscurity.
For Clara's sake, Maren had let many things pass.
A wrong place card. A forgotten birthday. A joke about bloodlines. Adelaide calling the child sensitive whenever she cried.
But there was a difference between patience and surrender. Maren heard her father's voice saying that from years earlier, when she had worn her wedding dress and believed love would make the distinction unnecessary.
Now Clara's tears were soaking her shoulder.
