CHAPTER 4: Julian Searches for the Safe Side

Julian Whitcomb arrived beside them a moment too late and with the face of a man measuring the room before measuring the wound.
He loved Clara. Maren believed that. But he loved peace more, and in the Whitcomb family peace always meant Adelaide remained unchallenged.
'Mother,' Julian said carefully, 'there must have been a misunderstanding.'
Maren stared at him.
The word misunderstanding landed between them like another spill.
Clara clutched Maren's sleeve. Her hair ribbon had slipped loose, and a streak of sauce clung near her collarbone. She looked not only hurt, but embarrassed to have been hurt where everyone could see.
Adelaide's mouth softened into a performance of patience.
'Julian, darling, your wife is emotional. She has never understood how our family handles public behavior.'
Maren stood slowly, Clara still in her arms.
For years she had swallowed sentences at dinners, board luncheons, holidays, and charity photographs. She had done it to keep Clara from learning the sound of family war.
Tonight, silence had taught her daughter something worse.
