CHAPTER 11: The Witness Bus

Naomi Bell reached the federal courthouse with the cafeteria video, the parking lot photograph, and the repaired image of the Falcon car under a protective order.
June sat beside her, both hands wrapped around a paper cup she had not touched. She looked smaller than she had in the prison lobby and angrier than she had in Caleb's childhood photographs.
"If this works," she said, "he gets a new hearing?"
"If this works, the state has to explain why it hid evidence, why Falcon appears in both the original case and the prison attack, and why a deputy warden tried to manufacture violence before appeal." Naomi closed her briefcase. "That is more than a hearing. It is a door."
The door almost opened.
Then Graham Pike filed an emergency affidavit claiming the parking lot image was altered. The judge agreed to hear testimony from Falcon's archive technician, a woman named Tessa Marr, who had signed the original deletion record three years earlier.
Tessa did not want to testify.
Naomi found her in a motel two counties over with a packed bag and a bruise on her wrist she would not discuss.
"I was told the footage showed nothing," Tessa said. "Then I saw Evan Holt get out of the car. Travis was already hurt, but he was alive when Caleb left. Evan went back to him. I deleted the file because Pike stood behind me while I did it."
June recorded every word.
The marshal service agreed to transport Tessa to court at dawn.
At Copper Ridge, Caleb learned from Naomi during a monitored legal call that the witness existed. He pressed the phone to his ear so hard his fingers ached.
"Do not tell me where she is," he said.
"I wasn't going to."
"Good."
After the call, Caleb returned to his cell and found Rusk waiting outside it. The big man had a sealed envelope in one hand.
"This came through kitchen supply," Rusk said. "No name."
Inside was a single photograph.
A white transport van. A rural road. A Falcon sedan behind it.
On the back, someone had written:
WITNESSES HAVE ACCIDENTS.
